LuxOS is custom firmware for Bitcoin ASIC miners, made by Luxor Technology, the US company behind the Luxor mining pool. It replaces the stock firmware on Bitmain Antminer and some MicroBT Whatsminer models and adds autotuning, power targeting and fast curtailment. If you searched for “luxos” or “LuxOS download” because you run SHA-256 ASICs, you are on the right page. Other products called Luxos, such as earbuds or car parts, have nothing to do with it.
It suits home miners fitting a machine into a limited circuit and farms in demand-response programmes that must cut power within seconds. It is closed source and carries a fee, so check that before flashing a fleet.
LuxOS at a glance
| Item | Details |
| Latest version | Release of 21 September 2026 (LuxOS releases are named by date) |
| Licence / fees | Free to install, closed source; Luxor’s docs state a 2.8% firmware fee. Luxor’s own Bitcoin pool charges 0% pool fee, but that is a pool fee, not a firmware fee waiver |
| Platforms | Runs on the miner’s control board. Luxor Commander (installer and manager) runs on Windows, macOS (Apple Silicon build) and Linux (AppImage); LuxOS Installer is a separate command-line tool |
| Supported hardware | Bitmain Antminer 19 and 21 series (S19, S19j Pro, S19 XP, S21, S21 Pro, S21+, S21 XP, T21 and Hydro variants, depending on control board and hashboard); MicroBT Whatsminer M50, M50S, M50S+, M50S++, M60, M60S (selected variants). Algorithm: SHA-256 |

| Best for | Antminer and Whatsminer owners who want efficiency tuning, power caps and scripted curtailment |
What it does
- Autotuning with preset profiles: each profile is a voltage and frequency combination, and the AutoTuner fine-tunes the hashboards for the chosen profile.
- Power targeting: you set a wattage and a control loop holds the machine at that power draw as ambient temperature changes.
- Curtailment: on command the miner drops to about 25 W in under five seconds and ramps back up when woken. Ramp speed has been configurable since the July 2026 release.
- Advanced Thermal Management (ATM) underclocks as the room heats up and steps back up when it cools, so hot afternoons do not end in thermal shutdowns.
- A cgminer-style API on TCP port 4028 and an HTTP API on port 8080 for monitoring and automation. Commands that change the machine need a session.
- Luxor Commander scans your network, monitors machines, installs LuxOS in bulk, changes settings and can remove other third-party firmware before installing.
- Uninstall: an API command and a Commander option return the miner to stock firmware.
How miners use it
Flash a few machines with Commander
- Install Luxor Commander on a computer on the same LAN as the miners.
- Open Configure Networks, enter the IP range of your miners and save.
- Press Scan Network, select the machines and choose Install LuxOS. Installation takes several minutes per batch. Your existing pool and network settings are kept.
- Optional: under Configure Miners → power settings, enable the AutoTuner, then choose an ATM profile.
Check a miner from the command line
The TCP API takes JSON. Replace MINER_IP with the machine’s address:
echo '{"command":"version+summary"}' | nc MINER_IP 4028
curl -X POST -H 'Content-Type: application/json' -d '{"command":"summary"}' http://MINER_IP:8080/api
Look for "STATUS":"S" in the reply, which means the command succeeded.
Curtail during a price spike
- Open a session. The reply contains a
SessionID. Only one session can be active at a time. - Send the sleep command, then wake the miner later with the same session ID.
- Close the session with
logoffso the next script can log on.
echo '{"command":"logon"}' | nc MINER_IP 4028
echo '{"command":"curtail","parameter":"SESSION_ID,sleep"}' | nc MINER_IP 4028
echo '{"command":"curtail","parameter":"SESSION_ID,wakeup"}' | nc MINER_IP 4028
Add a backup pool
echo '{"command":"addpool","parameter":"stratum+tcp://pool.example.com:3333,YOUR_ACCOUNT.worker1,"}' | nc MINER_IP 4028
Keep the trailing comma even with an empty password. If autosave is disabled, changes made through the API are lost after a reboot.
Install and first run
Windows: run the Commander installer. Luxor’s own guide warns that Windows may show a security prompt for the installer. Only accept it for a file you got from Luxor’s official site, and never turn off your antivirus globally to make a tool run.
macOS: Luxor documents an Apple Silicon build that you drag into Applications.
Linux: Commander ships as an AppImage. Make it executable with chmod +x, install FUSE through your package manager (Luxor’s guide uses Ubuntu and apt) and start it from a terminal.
Check the compatibility list against your exact model, control board and hashboard revision before you flash. Luxor notes that machines with CVITEK control boards and any Antminer running Bitmain firmware dated March 2024 or newer need its Remote Install procedure; the standard path does not work for them. For scripted or very large rollouts, LuxOS Installer is a command-line executable that can install from a CSV list or run as a small REST API server.
Third-party firmware changes how your miner runs. Ask your seller or manufacturer what it means for your warranty. Keep a note of the stock firmware version so you can compare after uninstalling. Only flash and tune machines you own or are authorised to manage.
Limitations
- Closed source, with a 2.8% firmware fee documented by Luxor. You cannot audit the code, and the fee applies on any pool.
- Hardware support is narrower than “all ASICs”: Antminer 19 and 21 series plus a short list of Whatsminer M50/M60 variants. Canaan Avalon units are not on the current compatibility list.
- Newer Bitmain stock firmware and CVITEK boards need the remote install route, which adds a step for recent machines.
- Tuning trades hashrate for efficiency or the other way round. Whether mining pays depends on your electricity price, hardware and the Bitcoin price, and no firmware changes that.
LuxOS vs alternatives
Braiins OS is the closest match. It is ASIC firmware with autotuning from the team behind Braiins Pool, and the usual choice when people search “luxos vs braiins”. Compare the two on your exact models, because their hardware lists differ. VNish is another widely used third-party Antminer firmware and the other common comparison. If you also run GPU rigs and want one dashboard for everything, Hive OS manages ASICs alongside GPU farms but works differently from a dedicated firmware like LuxOS.
FAQ
Where do I get the LuxOS download?
Luxor distributes LuxOS through its own tools: Luxor Commander for Windows, macOS and Linux, and the command-line LuxOS Installer. Use the firmware section of Luxor’s official website and its documentation for the current builds.
Is LuxOS free?
It costs nothing to install, but Luxor’s documentation states a 2.8% fee for the firmware. Mining on Luxor’s own pool removes the pool fee, not the firmware fee.
LuxOS vs Braiins OS: which is better?
Neither one wins on every model. Both offer autotuning and power control; check which one supports your control board and hashboard, compare the fees, and test on one machine before flashing the farm.
LuxOS vs VNish?
Both are third-party Antminer firmwares with tuning features. LuxOS adds Whatsminer support, a documented curtailment API and SOC 2 Type 2 certification on Luxor’s side.
Is LuxOS safe to install?
It is maintained by a known US company and update indices are signed with Ed25519 since the September 2026 release. Any firmware flash still carries some risk, so start with one unit and get the installer only from Luxor.
Can I go back to stock firmware?
Yes. Commander has an uninstall option, and the uninstallluxos API command removes LuxOS and restores the stock firmware.
Does LuxOS work on Whatsminer?
On selected models only: specific M50, M50S, M50S+, M50S++, M60 and M60S variants listed on Luxor’s compatibility page.
Will LuxOS make my miner profitable?
It can improve efficiency, but profit depends on your power cost, hardware and the Bitcoin price.
