Braiins OS is aftermarket firmware for Bitcoin ASIC miners, mainly Bitmain Antminer S19 and S21 series machines. It replaces the stock firmware to autotune each hash chip, cap or raise power draw, and manage heat more intelligently. It is used by home miners with a single Antminer as well as large farms. The companion app, Braiins Toolbox, installs, upgrades and configures Braiins OS on many machines at once, so a search for a Braiins OS download usually ends with both tools.
Braiins OS is free to install and run, but it is closed-source, licensed firmware with a developer fee: the official FAQ states a 2–2.5% dev fee depending on the hardware model, taken as a share of your hashrate sent to Braiins Pool. Braiins Toolbox is a separate download from the same developer.

What it does
- Autotunes every hash chip for the power or hashrate target you set, giving stronger chips more work and weaker chips less.
- Lets you underclock to cut power and heat, or overclock where the PSU and cooling allow it.
- Uses Dynamic Performance Scaling (DPS) to step power down when the miner runs hot and back up when it cools, instead of shutting off.
- Handles cold starts with a preheat stage, and offers an immersion mode that removes the need for fake fan plugs.
- Pauses and resumes hashing quickly, which suits demand-response and curtailment programs.
- Speaks Stratum V2 (encrypted, harder to hijack) as well as standard Stratum V1, and works with any Bitcoin pool.
- Exposes a gRPC public API with a REST wrapper and documented error codes, so farms can plug miners into their own monitoring.
- Shows a dashboard with power and hashrate graphs, per-hashboard health and per-chip data.
How miners use it
Install on a batch of Antminers with Braiins Toolbox
- Get Braiins Toolbox for your OS. It has a graphical interface and a command line.
- Scan your LAN. By default the Toolbox only scans private address ranges.
- Install on the miners you choose. The official CLI syntax looks like this, with your own pool details:
./braiins-toolbox firmware install --url 'stratum+tcp://YOUR_USERNAME.{{miner.ip_x}}@pool.example.com:3333' --power 3000 --dps on '10.10.10.*'
The Toolbox runs compatibility checks first and asks for confirmation before it flashes anything. With --target-version you can install a specific release instead of the latest.
Try it from an SD card without touching stock firmware
- On S19 machines with Zynq or BeagleBone Black control boards, flash the official SD image to a microSD card of 128 MB to 8 GB with Etcher, Rufus or
dd. A plain file copy will not boot. - Insert the card and reboot the miner. It boots Braiins OS from the card.
- Find the miner’s IP address (Angry IP Scanner or Nmap) and open it in a browser.
- Remove the card to go back to the untouched stock firmware with all previous settings.
Upgrade or go back to stock
- Upgrade a fleet with
./braiins-toolbox firmware upgrade '10.10.10.1-50', or a single miner from System > Upgrade in the web interface. - Return machines to factory firmware with
./braiins-toolbox firmware restore '10.10.10.2'.
Install and first run
- Check compatibility first: support depends on the exact model, hashboard variant and control board. New variants are added in monthly releases, so read the release notes for your hardware.
- Allow time for tuning: according to the FAQ, the first autotune takes 1 to 9 hours, depending on the control board, power target and chip quality. Hashrate moves around during that time.
- Older models: the docs point S17-series SD cards to the 23.01 image and S9/S9i/S9j to 22.08.1. These machines do not get the current feature set.
- Verify images: Braiins publishes SHA-256 checksums for Toolbox downloads and a GPG public key to verify firmware images.
- Security: set a strong web interface password on first login and keep miners on a private network.
- Antivirus: Windows security tools sometimes flag network-scanning or mining utilities as potentially unwanted. Check the file against the official SHA-256 rather than disabling protection.
Replacing firmware and overclocking carry real risk. A failed flash or excessive power can damage hashboards or PSUs, and third-party firmware may affect your manufacturer warranty. Keep the stock firmware available, raise power in small steps and watch temperatures. Mine only on machines you own or are authorised to manage.
Limitations
- The dev fee of 2–2.5% of hashrate applies on every pool. Braiins Pool refunds its pool fee for hashrate from Braiins OS machines, so the overall cost depends on where you mine.
- It is closed source and licensed; the licence terms and fee can change, and renewed licences follow the current terms on the website.
- Bitmain Antminer and Braiins hardware only. Whatsminer, Avalon and other brands are not supported, and neither are non-SHA-256 ASICs.
- Older machines (S9, S17) are stuck on older releases.
- Overclocking gains are limited by your PSU, cooling and chip quality, and pushing power raises electricity use.
Braiins OS vs alternatives
LuxOS is the closest competitor: another aftermarket Antminer firmware with its own autotuning and fleet tools. Compare the dev fee, supported models and API for your fleet. VNISH is another common Antminer firmware. Hive OS is not a replacement firmware for S19/S21 tuning; it is a monitoring and management platform that can sit alongside ASICs. Large farms often combine firmware like Braiins OS with a separate management dashboard.
FAQ
Is Braiins OS free?
Installing and running it costs nothing up front, but a 2–2.5% developer fee is taken from your hashrate, depending on the model.
What is Braiins Toolbox?
It is Braiins’ batch-management app for Windows, macOS and Linux, with both a GUI and a command line. It scans your network, installs, upgrades or removes Braiins OS in batches, and changes pools, power targets and cooling settings on many miners at once. A few features also work on stock Antminer and Whatsminer firmware.
Which Antminers support Braiins OS?
Current releases support S21 and S19 families, T21 and T19. Older S17 and S9 machines are limited to older images. Check the release notes for your hashboard variant.
Braiins OS vs LuxOS: which is better?
Both autotune Antminers. The right choice depends on your models, the fee, the pool you use and the API features your farm relies on, so test both on a few machines.
Can I go back to stock firmware?
Yes. Use firmware restore in Braiins Toolbox, or simply remove the SD card if you were booting from it.
Will Braiins OS make my miner profitable?
It can improve efficiency, but profitability still depends on your electricity price, hardware, Bitcoin price and network difficulty. No firmware can promise earnings.
What to do if Braiins Toolbox is not working?
Make sure the PC can reach the miners on ports 22, 80 and 50051 and that the miners can reach Braiins’ installation server, as the docs require; also check the IP range. Pass the miner password with --password if it was changed. Lower --scan-rate over VPN or slow links, as the docs suggest.
